Loves
(posted 02 Oct 2008)

A very wise writing friend of mine just sent a note to a group I’m on about loves. First let me say that this woman is the woman I want to be when I grown up. And so I always listen to everything she has to say and find ways to help use her words to enrich my life.

But today’s words really struck me. She had read an article in Oprah magazine talking about the loves in life. The different ones that come from all different times of our entire life.

We spend so much time thinking about the things that aren’t right in our world that taking a few minutes to think about the things that are can be very gratifying.

So here mine are not all of them because this is a public forum, but some of them.

I love that I have two beautiful children who even though they aren’t perfect are mine. I love the sounds of their voices very different but still so harmonious for me.

I love that I have a man in my life who likes me for who I am. All the crazy silliness I get up to with my writing, actions and ideas.

I love that I have the kind of parents who never say no. That they are always there for me and even though there were times in my life when I wasn’t ready to reach for them they were still standing right there.

I love that I have good friends that even distance doesn’t matter to us. I can get an e-mail or a phone call and laugh or cry or just let out whatever emotions are bothering me and those friends always respond right away.

I love that the words that I am given to write from God touch readers and that these readers share the experience that they have reading my books with me. It is the final connection to God that completes the circle of my writing endeavors.

I love the way my Grandma’s hugs used to feel. When I’m really tired and feeling low I sometimes feel her arms wrap around me.

What about you guys? What do you love?

Kathy :)

  1. Hey, Kathy, great column (and now I want to know who this paragon is)! The funny thing is your question had me coming up with a lot of sensory type things. I love how good-tired I feel after a good workout. I loved the smell of my dog (I know–weird, but true)! I love the feeling of accomplishment when I’ve had a good writing day, and the feeling of being in the zone with my writing (though I almost don’t feel that). I love the feeling of being immersed in a good book. I love sitting on the couch with my husband and watching silly TV and laughing together. Getting my mom to laugh. Getting an unexpected email from a friend. The feeling of dancing with a big group of people–choreographed or not! Thanks for getting me thinking about all this–a good way to start the day…

  2. Hey Debbie!

You made me think of sensory things I love…like the smell of freshly cut grass and the scent of the salt on the air when you get close to the Atlantic Ocean.

It was a great way for me to start the day too.

    And the wise woman…Barbara Samuel.

  3. Great, thought-provoking question, Kathy! I wonder what the things we love say about us…

Maybe it’s just where I am in life right now, but the things I love are more character-related than anything else. For example, I love that I know I can handle just about anything life throws at me. I love that I’m learning from my experiences and growing as a person. I love that my heart is still willing to take chances, even though it’s been broken a time or two lately!

I love that I can appreciate how fortunate I am to have good friends and a good life. I love that work isn’t the only thing in my life anymore. I love my new kitty, and I love that she came into my life at the exact moment I needed her. I love knowing that I can move anywhere and do anything I want (well, within reason), even though I may not know yet where I want to go or what I want to do! :)

Most of all, I love that I now know that being alone is far, far better than being in a bad relationship. It was a hard-earned lesson and I’m grateful that I learned it before it completely destroyed me.

  5. What a great post, Kathy! In this fast-paced world, it’s so easy to get caught up in what bothers us, it good to remember what is right.

I love that I am so blessed with a wonderful family and good friends. Like you said, none of us is perfect, but sometimes it’s the imperfections that make me love my “people” even more.

I love my daughter’s laugh and how she’s such a wise old soul.

I love my job, and that I have the opportunity to live my dream.

I love my animals – my cat and… yes, I have to say it… I can’t believe I love a dog so much I’m silly over her!!!

I love fall and chocolate and photographs and art (especially the Impressionists) and books and cobalt blue glass (that color when the sun shines through it) and I love the memories of people I’ve lost who’ve touched my life.

I could go on and on, but I will close with that thought. Thanks, Kathy, for reminding me of what matters.

  6. Beverly–I love how happy you are right now!! It really makes me feel good to know that you are in a good place.

And your kitty made me think of Godiva…its so funny to me how a little animal can bring so much joy into my life.

  7. Nancy;

I was the same way once I started on my list yesterday going on and on. This morning the sun is falling through the leaves of the tree outside my office window, casting this dancing shadows on the wall (its windy outside) and I can’t help but love that pattern. It is a fall pattern.

Thanks for coming and sharing your thoughts today everyone!!!
