Quote of the day.
(posted 15 Sep 2008)
“The shortest and surest way to live with honor in the world, is to be in reality what we would appear to be; all human virtues increase and strengthen themselves by the practice and experience of them.”
Socrates
I get an e-mail quote of the day every day and some times the quotes are just interesting and other times they really resonate with me.
This is such a powerful one today. I mean how many times do we present ourselves to the world as one type of person when in reality we act like someone else. I always try to be true to myself and honest in my behaviors but there are times when its easier to pretend to be something I’m not.
When I am pretending to be like the other suburban moms I know that it is easier to fit in but I leave my encounters at the school feeling bereft and a bit disappointed. I’m not like other moms. And if you are a woman reading this you probably aren’t either. We have things in common….like a desire for our kids to be happy and successful but beyond that we are different.
My world view is slightly askew from other mother’s I know. I don’t care about trends though I do love fashion, I don’t care about what type of car someone drives or where they vacationed over summer or on school breaks. I travel to places I love or want to explore as opposed to going where everyone else does.
But some times its easier to pretend that you do. Blending in with everyone else gives me a barrier between myself and the world, a place to hide right out in the open.
Do you ever do this? Take the safer route because being who you really are will leave you too open, too vulnerable?
