All about Dad
(posted 14 Jun 2008)
In anticipation of Father’s Day, I’m dedicating this weekend to my Dad. He’s the kind of guy who’s rough and ready. He was a Marine and grew up the youngest of four sons. I’ve always thought that God gave my Dad three daughters because he needed a little softness in his life.
When my sisters and I were growing up we always knew that nothing bad could happen when our dad with us. So if he wasn’t home and we wanted to go out in the swamp and pick blackberries to eat, we’d put on his big rubber boots and stomp around like he did. We’d even go so far as to yell out Dad’s with us.
I can’t say that the snakes in the swamp actually understood us but I can say that nothing every bothered us. We just knew that by evoking Dad’s name we’d be safe.
When I was very young (under ten) I used to walk around our chicken farm without my shirt on. I’d wear cut-offs and a cowboy hat just like my dad. He always seemed so larger than life back then.
To be honest he still is larger than life to me. He’s the guy who can fix anything and will run back out to the car 100 times to get sweaters, purses, forgotten toys. He’s the guy who said to me on my wedding day if you don’t want to go through with this, just say the word and he’d take care of it. Having that confidence of knowing whatever I need that my dad is there to take care of it is something very precious.
I love him very much and am very glad that he’s my dad.
What about you? Is your dad a larger than hero to you?
