These times they are a changin’
(posted 12 Jun 2008)

I think I may have mentioned here that I am now divorced. But if not, I am. I have been adjusting to a lot of things not the least of which is not having a husband for the first time in 17 years! But one of the things that is new to me is being without my kids. They have gone to Florida to visit their grandparents for the month of June. I’m kind of at a loss without their noise and questions and their laughter and fighting and all the other things that come with being a mom.

Its an odd thing to be experiencing. One of the positive aspects of this time is how it is giving me a chance to renew my acquaintance with myself. Sometimes when you are a mom, it’s easy to forget who you are and to just focus on being your children’s mother. And what they need in my case always comes first. It’s a bit odd to just make what I want for dinner instead of thinking about what my kiddos don’t like.

Have you ever had a situation like this? Or are you pretty well-rounded and in tune with yourself all the time?

  1. I’m sending you a big cyber hug. I didn’t know you had a blog or I’d have been over here sooner. I’m divorced, have been for twelve years now. It isn’t easy beinga single mom, and you’re right, it is very hard to change gears and not feel guilty because you want something more than being a mom. Not that being a mom isn’t an awesome job, but we need more. It’s hard letting them go and I’m afraid that part doesn’t get any easier. I still worry about my kids when they have to go for their visits and as much as I need a break somedays, I still miss them horribly. Plus, going through a divorce takes its toll on your psyche. You were a part of someone else’s life and let’s face it, we all bend for the men in our lives. So, the best advice I can give you is to refind who you are, redefine what you want. It sounds like you’re doing that. Hang in there! You have my email, so you know where to find me. Been there, done that and bought the t-shirt.

    xoxo

  2. Rae;

    Thanks so much for this email. I really had no idea how difficult or different life would be without my kids all the time.

    Hugs back to you.
